Created by Robert Garner on Wed Aug 07 2024 and edited on Wed Aug 07 2024
We’ve seen a huge amount of change in the recruitment & talent acquisition industries over the past 4.5 years. The industry has swung from being decimated to an unbelievably buoyant period to once again being on the ropes to hopefully showing a few green shoots recently. We’ve seen a huge amount of recruitment technology, AI and a number of lead generation tools enter the recruitment market. It’s harder to stay up to date with the sector and it’s never been more important to so that’s why we've curated a list of the absolute best recruitment blogs catering to UK recruitment agencies and in-house recruiters.
In this post I’m just focusing on traditional blogs, those in standard blog format, those where you can engage with and leave comments or where the primary business of the website is the blog. I’ll dedicate another post to recruitment supplier blogs because there's a great selection out there. These resources aren't just about industry news; they offer actionable advice on recruitment website design, technology, SEO, and the strategies that drive success.
Abstraction Labs Blog
I had to give us a quick mention even though we’re not a proper blog but if you're looking for news on recruitment marketing, websites, SEO, technology, recruitment business development, recruitment communities, recruitment podcasts, recruitment website design, content, and so much more. We focus on practical advice you can easily implement and tools that are easily accessible, often free on many levels.
Boolean Strings
Irina Shamaeva, a renowned sourcing expert, dives deep into the world of Boolean search strings and other advanced sourcing techniques. This blog is a treasure trove of information for experienced recruiters looking to up their sourcing game. She covers everything under the banner of boolean string and sourcing including, URL manipulation, GitHub search tools, AI, LinkedIn features, big data and so much more.
ERE
A long-standing pillar in the recruitment community, although more North America focused. ERE provides in-depth analysis and thought leadership on the future of recruiting, HR technology, and talent management strategies. It's a must-read for those seeking a strategic perspective. They cover the economy, the recruitment market, recruitment events. Tech, AI, candidate & client experience, DEI, employer branding and basically everything recruitment related.
Evil HR Lady
Suzanne Lucas, the "Evil HR Lady," isn't afraid to tackle tough HR topics with honesty and humour. Her blog offers a refreshingly candid look at workplace dynamics, HR policies, and employee relations. It’s regularly updated, every single day and covers topics such as job postings, job descriptions, employment law, leadership, HR (of course), L&D, DEI and a whole lot more.
Hunted
If you’ve been in recruitment for a while then you’ll remember Ed Hunter from back in the day, the original source of salacious gossip and recruitment memes. Ed Hunter took a hiatus for a little while but was resurrected sometime last / this year and he’s back to his old antics of injecting humour into the world of recruitment, tackling topics like self-esteem, social engagement, and the quirks of the recruiting profession. It's a fun read that also offers valuable insights.
HR Bartender
Sharlyn Lauby, a seasoned HR professional, serves up advice on a wide range of HR topics, from recruiting and onboarding to employee engagement and workplace culture. It’s aimed at both sides of the fence - job seekers and HR, talent & recruitment professionals. Her blog is known for its practical tips and real-world examples. She covers areas such as AI, imposter syndrome, CV writing tips, benefit package, employment law, L&D, well-being, etc.
HR Capitalist
This one’s been dormant for a good few years now but there’s still some great content on there so thought I’d give it a mention. The blog makes HR topics engaging and accessible, with a focus on practical advice, case studies, and insights from industry leaders. It's still a great resource for HR content and best practices.
HR Ringleader / Trish McFarlane
The HR Ringleader is a much older blog, which is now dormant so look to Trish’s new site for up to date blogs. Led by Trish McFarlane, an HR advisor and technology expert, this blog offers valuable insights into the world of HR technology, leadership, and women in HR. It's a must-read for HR professionals seeking to leverage technology and advance their careers.
Katrina Collier
Katrina Collier previously worked within recruitment before becoming a talent consultant, author, keynote speaker, facilitator and mentor. This blog is a must-read for anyone passionate about candidate experience. Katrina Collier shares her expertise on building authentic relationships with candidates, social recruiting, and creating a positive hiring journey.
LinkedIn Talent Blog
I hadn’t really come across this one until recently, which is surprising given how big LinkedIn is and how much time I spend on the platform. LinkedIn's official blog for recruiters is a comprehensive resource covering everything from diversity and inclusion to employer branding, interviewing techniques, and the latest recruitment technology trends.
Matt Charney
Another unfortunately dormant blog but there’s still some great content there. It hasn’t been updated since 2020 but you’ll find a tonne of useful content around recruitment technology, DEI, LinkedIn, etc. Matt is now the editor-in-chief of The Recruiter over in the US so you can follow his antics there.
Rally Recruitment Marketing
Another addition from North America, the Rally blog has more of a focus on recruitment marketing, covering areas such as PPC, social media, personal branding, employer branding, interviews with recruitment marketers, recruitment & career websites and a lot more.
Recruiter Magazine
This title has been around longer than I’ve been in the business, in fact I used to actually recruit for this publishing house back in the day. This UK-based magazine's blog offers a mix of news, interviews, opinion pieces, and practical advice for recruiters in the UK market. It covers a wide range of topics relevant to both agency and in-house recruiters (but more of an agency focus).
Recruiting Blogs
An amalgamation of several different recruitment blogs, as I’m sure you can tell by the name. They curate some of the best blog posts out there and bring them altogether on one site. A great resource for diverse content, written by recruitment professionals from a huge selection of international organisations.
Recruiting Brief
A brilliant site, offering blog posts, resources, industry news and interviews from prominent members of the sector. The blog covers a wide range of subjects including salary transparency, work life balance, talent attraction, internships & apprenticeships and generally anything recruitment, HR & talent related.
Recruiting Daily
Linked to Recruiting Blogs, Recruiting Daily is their own work, written by their staff writers. The blog is updated on a regular basis and has more of a North American twist. They cover everything from recruitment technology, research & surveys, HR, employer branding and lots more.
Recruiting Unblog
The blog is no longer active and has been dormant for around 12 years but it’s pretty famous so thought I’d give it a mention as there’s still some great content on there. It was the brainchild of Bill Boorman who’s a bit of a big deal in the recruitment & talent space. Bill started his career in recruitment and moved into becoming a keynote speaker and advisor to several recruitment agencies and recruitment technology firms.
Recruiting Gym
The Recruiting Gym is run by Angela Cripps but is a coalition of several different recruitment trainers who are specialists in their respective areas such as DEI, sales training, pricing, marketing, etc. The blog is supported by a podcast series and guest bloggers, covering a wide range of areas such as health & wellbeing, social media management, LinkedIn, recruitment technology, and a whole lot more.
Recruiting Talent
Now in all fairness Recruiting talent is a Rec2Rec but the blog does give you the ability to leave comments so I thought I’d include them as they fit the proper definition of a blog. They’ve been running and regularly updating their blog since 2019 and cover loads of recruitment topics such as communication, health & wellbeing, job hunting advice, CV & interview tips, etc.
Sinrona Says
Another dormant blog but it has some great archived content and did win some awards for its work back in the day. It’s a bit of a headache to read due to the formatting and small text so bear in mind you have been warned.
The Recruitment Network
This UK-focused blog provides a mix of content, including industry news, marketing tips, and thought leadership pieces. It's a great resource for staying connected to the UK recruitment community. They cover areas such as the UK elections, business plans, maximising business profits, recruitment marketing, recruitment operations and so much more.
The Savage Truth
Greg Savage, a recruitment industry veteran, has had an epic recruitment career and now offers training and keynotes speeches. He shares his unfiltered opinions and insights on a wide range of topics, from leadership and sales to candidate experience and the future of work. Check out his books too - “The Savage Truth” and “Recruit The Savage Way”, they’re both great reads.
SourceCon
If you're serious about sourcing, this is your go-to resource. And if you’re not serious about sourcing then what are you doing in recruitment?! SourceCon's blog is packed with tips, tools, and techniques for finding and engaging with top talent, especially in niche markets. You’ll find a heap of resources around professional writing, sourcing with a focus on diversity, talent intelligence, tech & AI, candidate experience and a lot more.
The Recruiter Life Chronicles
Not strictly a blog and more a newsletter where you can leave comments so thought I’d give the team a mention. It’s a definite break from the usual content put out by The Recruiter Life. More serious content but still with an entertaining tone. They cover topics such as recruitment technology, recruiter salaries, personal branding, new business development and loads more recruitment and non-recruitment related topics.
UK Recruiter
The UK Recruiter is one of the original UK recruitment blogs and Louise has done a brilliant job building it up over the years, giving valuable resources to the UK recruitment industry. You may also know her as the face of several recruitment industry events. She covers everything to do with recruitment including, industry events, awards, using video content in recruitment, recruitment marketing, L&D, the economy, employer branding - you get the idea.
Undercover Recruiter
This blog covers the full spectrum of recruitment topics, from employer branding and candidate experience to DEI and the latest recruitment technology. They often feature guest posts from industry experts.
Wizardsourcer
Written by Jonathan Kidder who has been the author of several recruitment related books and currently works in the recruitment team for Amazon. Hios blog focuses on sourcing, AI, the role of technology, boolean strings, assessment tools, prompt engineering and lots more. I found the advertising a little intrusive but a blogger has to make money somehow - good content costs money!
